Useful Information

  • SPYWARE: We have received reports that subscribers are being sent spam emails asking them to send money ... for many 'justified' reasons. Please never trust anybody on the internet and always seek professional advise before ordering any medicine or doing any financial deals. 1000 excuses are quoted to convince you to send the money. Please don't fall into such traps. If you already have the problem please download the spyware blaster by clicking on the link under Important Links

  • DO NOT OPEN email attachments FOR ANY REASON even if they come from somebody you know. They may send you a virus without knowing themselves. That is how viruses are spread. So when you receive an attachment, send an email back to the sender asking him if he really sent you that attachment before opening it.

  • SPAM control: If you go on www.global.net.mt and click on 'SUPPORT', you will find the instructions of how you can identify spam. Note that not all spam is correctly detected so BEFORE DELETING the spam be sure there are no good email. When our ANTI-SPAM servers are sure to detect spam, these are deleted immediately and will never arrive to you.

  • ANTI-VIRUS: Note that although we do have anti-virus scanners, the history of a virus is as follows: Somebody writes a virus and releases it on the internet. It is later detected and this may take 1 to 5 days or more. Anti-Virus software houses write an anti-virus to detect it usually in a few hours, usually before 24 hours. The Anti-Virus software is distributed to our Antio-Virus Servers and your anti-virus software on your computer. This process takes a number of days, so in these days neither we nor you will be able to detect the damage. The damage can range from completely deleting your computer information to sitting in your computer undetected and making your computer an illegal tool for them to use against other internet users.

  • Windows Update: Make sure that you install all Microsoft updates from Windows Update website. These updates will help your computer to prevent malicious attacks by hackers.

    Speed Test

If you are having a slow internet connection, please follow these simple steps to identify if you have a problem with your connection or not.

  • Click on the following link to start download a file. Download Test File
After clicking on the file you will see the following screen. Click Open.

  • After Clicking Open you Will see the Downloading Progress Screen. Take note of the Transfer Rate and then press Cancel.

Your speed should be the following:
    Dial-up's: Between 3KB/sec and 5KB/sec
    ADSL 256K: 20KB/sec 25KB/sec
    ADSL 1024K: 80KB/sec 100KB/sec

If the speed shown is below the range above, then you must check your software, your modem or your phone line.
To arrive to the above speed levels, you have to follow this example. A phone line can connect up to 56k. Normal acceptable level is 50k. If you have 50kBITS per second then the download shown on your screen will be about 5kBYTES per second. This is because every 8 bits make one byte but with every byte transferred, 2 are considered as overhead so a good estimate is to divide by 10 to arrive at a good conversion rate. If you get a 33k modem connection then your download speed shown will be of 3KB (kiloBYTES) per second.

During this test you must not have any other additional downloads in progress. If you open two tests at the same time or you have this test running while something else like a virus update or windows update being downloaded at the same time then the speed you will see will be divided by the number of downloads in progress.
